What Is Supported Living?

Supported living is a model of care and support that enables adults with a range of needs — including learning disabilities, mental health conditions, physical disabilities and acquired brain injuries — to live in their own home or a shared property, with personalised support provided around them. Unlike residential care, supported living keeps the individual’s tenancy and their support entirely separate — meaning the person is always in control of where they live and who supports them.

At Cam Gray Support Services, we believe that everyone has the right to a home of their own, a life of their choosing and a future full of possibility. Our supported living service exists to make that a reality for the people we support — providing the right level of help, at the right time, in a way that promotes independence rather than dependency.

Who Is Supported Living For?

Supported living is an excellent option for adults who want to live as independently as possible but who benefit from having professional support available to help them manage daily life. It is particularly well suited to individuals who do not need the round-the-clock presence of a residential care environment, but who would struggle without some structured, reliable support.

We provide supported living services for adults who are:

  • Living with a learning disability and working towards greater independence
  • Managing a mental health condition and building confidence in daily living
  • Transitioning from residential care or the family home into their own space
  • Living with an acquired brain injury or neurological condition
  • Adults with autism who benefit from structured, consistent support
  • Young adults moving on from children’s services into adult social care
  • Individuals whose needs have changed and who require more or less support over time

No two people’s journeys are the same. Our supported living service is flexible enough to meet people wherever they are — and to grow and evolve as their needs, aspirations and confidence develop.

What Our Supported Living Service Includes

Our supported living packages are highly individualised. The support we provide is shaped entirely by the goals, needs and preferences of the person we are supporting — not by a standard template. That said, our service typically encompasses a broad and comprehensive range of support areas.

Daily Living Skills

Building and maintaining the skills needed for everyday life is at the heart of everything we do. We support individuals to develop practical capabilities across cooking, cleaning, budgeting, shopping and household management — not by doing things for them, but by working alongside them, encouraging confidence and celebrating every step forward.

Personal Care and Health Support

Where personal care support is required, our trained staff provide dignified, respectful assistance with washing, dressing, oral hygiene and continence care. We also support individuals to manage their own health — attending medical appointments, understanding their medication, and maintaining the healthy routines that contribute to their overall wellbeing.

Community Inclusion

A fulfilling life is not lived solely within four walls. We actively support individuals to engage with their local community — whether that means attending a day service, joining a club or group, accessing leisure and cultural activities, volunteering or simply getting out and about. Community connection is central to wellbeing, and we work hard to make it a real and regular part of each person’s life.

Relationships and Social Skills

We support individuals to build and maintain positive relationships — with family, friends, neighbours and the wider community. Where social skills development is a goal, our staff work sensitively and practically to help individuals navigate social situations with growing confidence and ease.

Employment and Education Support

Many of the people we support have ambitions around work, volunteering or education. We actively encourage and facilitate those ambitions — supporting individuals to explore opportunities, prepare for interviews, access training and develop the skills and confidence they need to pursue meaningful daytime activities and employment.

Financial Management

Managing money is a key aspect of independent living. We support individuals to understand and manage their own finances — from opening and operating a bank account and budgeting for weekly expenses, through to understanding bills, benefits and financial responsibilities. Our approach is always to build capability and confidence, never to take over.

Safety and Risk Management

Living independently comes with an element of risk — and that is entirely normal. We work with individuals and their families to identify and understand risks, and to develop positive risk management strategies that enable people to live full lives without unnecessary restriction. We believe in the right of every person to make informed choices about their own life, even where those choices carry some degree of risk.

Emotional Wellbeing and Mental Health

We pay close attention to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of the people we support. Our staff are trained to recognise signs of distress or deteriorating mental health, to respond with sensitivity and care, and to liaise with specialist services where additional support is needed. We work in close partnership with community mental health teams, psychologists and other professionals to ensure a truly joined-up approach.

Our Approach to Independence

At Cam Gray Support Services, independence is not a destination — it is a direction of travel. We do not measure success by how little support someone needs. We measure it by how much each person is growing, achieving and flourishing in their own life.

Our supported living teams work with what is often called an enabling approach. This means that rather than stepping in to complete tasks on someone’s behalf, we step alongside them — prompting, encouraging, teaching and celebrating. Over time, as skills and confidence develop, the level of support we provide can be gradually reduced, giving individuals an ever-greater sense of autonomy and achievement.

Person-Centred Planning

Every person we support has a detailed, person-centred support plan that is built around their individual goals, aspirations, preferences and support needs. This plan is developed collaboratively — with the individual, their family or advocates, and any other professionals involved in their care. It is reviewed regularly to ensure it continues to reflect where the person is in their journey and what they want to achieve next.

Consistent, Trusted Support Staff

Consistency matters enormously in supported living. People thrive when they are supported by familiar faces who understand them, respect them and have built a genuine relationship with them over time. We work hard to ensure that each person has a consistent core team of support workers, and we invest significantly in staff retention to protect those important relationships.

Types of Supported Living Arrangements

Supported living is not a single, fixed model. There are a number of different living arrangements that fall under the supported living umbrella, and we are experienced in supporting individuals across all of them.

Individual Tenancies

Many of the people we support live alone in their own flat or house, holding their own tenancy agreement with a housing provider. They have the privacy and independence of their own home, with our support team visiting at agreed times throughout the day and evening.

Shared Houses

Some individuals choose to share a house with others who also receive supported living services. This arrangement can offer a degree of natural companionship and community, while still maintaining individual tenancy rights and personalised support packages for each resident.

Supported Living With On-Site Staff

For individuals who require a higher level of support — including overnight or waking night provision — we can arrange supported living with staff available on-site or within the building. This model provides greater reassurance and security while still maintaining the individual’s status as a tenant in their own right.

Transitioning Into Supported Living

Moving into a supported living arrangement — whether from the family home, a residential placement or another care setting — is a significant life event. We take transition planning seriously, working closely with the individual, their family and all relevant professionals to ensure the move is made at the right pace and with the right preparation in place.

We carry out thorough pre-transition assessments, visit prospective properties together with the individual, develop detailed transition plans, and provide intensive introductory support in the early weeks to help the person settle, build confidence and establish their new routines.

Working With Families and Advocates

We recognise that families often carry significant anxiety when a loved one moves into a supported living arrangement — particularly if it is their first experience of the model. We welcome family involvement and work hard to ensure families feel informed, reassured and genuinely included throughout.

Regular communication, open-door reviews and a named key worker for each service user all help to ensure that families are never left wondering how their loved one is getting on. We see families as partners in care — and the people we support are always at the centre of every conversation.

Funding Supported Living

Supported living is typically funded through a combination of housing-related support and personal care funding. The care and support element is usually funded through a personal budget or direct payment from the local authority, while the housing costs are typically covered by Housing Benefit or Universal Credit.

We work with individuals, families and local authority commissioners to help navigate the funding landscape and ensure the right package is in place before any support begins. Our experienced team can guide you through the options available and help you understand exactly what to expect in terms of costs and contributions.
